Rapper 21 Savage has been arrested by US immigration after being accused of being a UK citizen.
Many fans of Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, 26, presumed he was a native of Atlanta.
A spokesman from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said he had been convicted of drug charges in 2014, and had been arrested on Sunday in a “targeted operation”.
He also clarified when he was first arrested, ICE was not aware of his immigration status.
Meanwhile the rapper’s lawyer has accused the US of trying to “intimidate” the rapper into leaving.
Charles Kuck said the arrest was “based upon incorrect information about prior criminal charges”, and that Shayaa had never tried to conceal his immigration status.
Where is 21 Savage from?
Where he actually comes from is a complicated answer.
As far as Spotify is concerned, it vaguely says “Atlanta-based”.
Meanwhile, Apple Music lists his origin as Dominica in the West Indies.
It was reported he was born in Newham, London, England – but this is clearly a matter of dispute.
The artist has been accused of leaving the UK in July 2005, and staying in the US since then without a valid visa from the age of 12.
According to the ICE, he failed to leave the country a year later when his visa expired.
They also claim he was convicted on felony drug charges in Fulton county, Georgia, in October 2014.
The agency added the Grammy-nominated rapper entered the US legally in July 2005, when he was just a minor.
However, he subsequently failed to leave the country under the terms of his non-immigrant visa.
According to ICE, this means that he has been unlawfully present in the US since his visa expired in July 2006.
Meanwhile, Shayaa has spoken in previous interviews about his childhood in Atlanta.
In one interview he claimed to be expelled from Stone Mountain Middle School in Atlanta aged “about 12” for taking a gun to class.
Although he has spoken lots about growing up in Atlanta, there is no evidence to suggest he has claimed to be born there.
His raps often refer to a violent upbringing in Atlanta surrounded by drugs and guns.
