Coronation Street spoilers: Ken Barlow and Rita Sullivan KILLED OFF in New Year cull?

TV

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has teased something “massive” is coming up for the older Coronation Street cast members come 2019.

Ken has lived on the Cobbles from the very beginning, starring in Corrie’s first episode on December 9, 1960.

The English teacher was the first Weatherfield resident to go to university and is known for his lengthy marriage to Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride).

Meanwhile, Rita’s time on the Cobbles has been just as eventful.

The Kabin owner moved onto Coronation Street back in 1964 and has established herself as the town matriarch.

But is their time in Weatherfield up?

“When I came back it was like going into the attic of your house and finding a box of toys you forgot you had,” Iain exclusively revealed to Daily Star Online.

“It was like, ‘Oh my God I’ve got Ken Barlow, I’ve got Rita Sullivan,’ so my preferences are broad.

“I love the historical characters but I think we have a talented younger cast as well.

“I am very story driven, my background is in story-lining, and the way I run things is if the writers have a brilliant story, I don’t really mind who it is for, if it’s good and it’s engaging then I will tell it.

“In the New Year we’ve got a really massive story that plays into some of our older cast.”

It’s not just the oldies that are facing something major though, as the younger characters will still be involved in the drama.

He continued: “Equally we have huge new chapters for your Daniels and Sineads, who are towards the younger end of the spectrum.

“We have a big story for Amy Barlow coming up.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
