The ginger chart-topper leads the annual Young Musicians Rich List after making megabucks on his Divide tour last year.

Beatles legend Sir Paul, 76, is worth a whopping £750m and is second only to composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, 71, whose bank balance swells at £820m.

Superstar Ed has overtaken Adele (£150m) for the first time, but the Hello hitmaker remains the highest woman in the rankings.

The pair are exceptions in a list dominated by veteran stadium rockers with decades of experience to their names.

Ed’s wealth goes from strength to strength as last year Forbes magazine named him the world’s highest-earning solo artist.

The crooner’s mammoth Divide tour, which will have included 260 concerts in six continents attended by around 6.4 million fans when it finally comes to an end in August of this year, has helped to swell his wealth by £80m in the last 12 months.

The Divide album rocketed to number one in the charts.

Overall Ed is the 17th richest musician in the UK, overtaking 31-year-old Adele, who last month announced she is getting divorced from husband Simon Konecki.

U2 (£583m), Sir Elton John, 72, (£320m) and Rolling Stones legends Sir Mick Jagger (£275m) and Keith Richards, both 75, (£260m) also feature high up the combined list.

On the compilation of wealthy young musicians, all five former members of chart-topping boyband One Direction make the cut with Harry Styles, (£58m), Niall Horan, both 25, (£49m), Louis Tomlinson (£44m), 27, Liam Payne, 25, (£42m) and Zayn Malik, 26, (£36m) all making the top 10.

The full lists are published in a special edition of the Sunday Times Magazine on May 12.
