Exclusive: Director Faraz Arif Ansari on Sheer Qorma’s grand world premiere

The Swara Bhaskar, Divya Dutta and Shabana Azmi starrer Sheer Qorma is all set for an international premiere at the BAFTA qualifying FRAMELINE film festival. Director Faraz Arif Ansari who has been a strong advocate for realistic stories about the LGBTQIA community and has earlier made a short film, Sisak that won several accolades around the globe for it’s impactful narrative of silence being the strongest language of love. 

Sheer Qorma

Talking about the long wait before the release of Sheer Qorma, Faraz said, “After waiting for over a year for Sheer Qorma to have its world premiere, it brings me such joy that we are having the grandest world premiere for the film at the BAFTA qualifying FRAMELINE Film Festival — the longest running, largest and most widely recognised queer film exhibition event in the world! And that too in pride month! It’s a double whammy, really.” 

They further added that it gives them great joy to see the film reaching a wider audience with the international premiere and about the nomination it has for at the festival in the category of Best Film, “We are also nominated for the Best Film award which makes this all the more special. Through 2021-22, Sheer Qorma will travel to over 250 film festivals across the globe, covering every continent and country. In June itself the film is having grand screenings in San Francisco, Connecticut, Florida, Vienna and Germany. We also won our first award in Vienna at the prestigious International Queer Minorities Film Festival. Love wins, indeed!”

Speaking about their team that worked relentlessly on the film and stayed patient till the release, Faraz shared, “I’m very grateful to my producer Marijke deSouza who took the leap of faith and made Sheer Qorma in the best possible way. And of course, ever grateful to Shabana Azmi ji, Divya Dutta & Swara Bhasker for being such powerful forces to come together and support a film like Sheer Qorma that opens universal conversations not just on love and acceptance but also on womanhood, sexuality, gender identities, nationality & faith. As a filmmaker, I’m thrilled to be a part of such an exciting evolution in storytelling where cinema not only entertains but also brings in massive, progressive changes in our lives.”
