Margot Robbie Shares Her Thoughts on a ‘Barbie’ Sequel Being Made

This summer, Margot Robbie’s Barbie blew up the box office earning over 1.4 billion dollars with Robbie in the titular role. The actress was also a producer on the Greta Gerwig directed project. The movie focuses on the Mattel toy, following her from the fantastical “Barbieland” to the real world after things start to go wrong in Barbie’s formerly perfect life.

In a new interview with the Associated Press, Robbie was asked about her interest in making a sequel to what seemed to be a standalone story.

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” Robbie said. “Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

She also noted that “original films can still hit huge” despite a proliferation of sequels and franchises in theaters right now.

“It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,” Robbie added. “It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants which is, you know, I think a misconception that a lot of people still have.”

She explained that she hopes the success of the movie would make it possible for other filmmakers to “have big original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly.”

Part of Barbie‘s success was attributed to its amazing promotional efforts and the enormous cast who were connected to it including stars Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Sharon Rooney, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, Scott Evans, John Cena, America Ferrera, Rhea Perlman, Will Ferrell, Michael Cera, Connor Swindells, and Helen Mirren.
