The competition also made history when Miss Spain – Angela Ponce – shattered barriers by becoming the first transgender Miss Universe contestant.
Ten stunning women battled it out to win the shiny title in Bangkok, Thailand, in an array of gorgeous evening gowns and swimsuits.
“What an amazing journey this has been”
Catriona, 24, donned a beautiful sparkling red dress when she scooped this year’s prestigious title.
The winner impressed judges during all rounds and was tipped for the crown early on.
She wrote on Instagram: “Philippines, this is it. What an amazing journey this has been. Philippines, you have endlessly inspired me.”
Miss South Africa – Tamaryn Green – secured second place in this year’s contest.
The medical student flaunted her svelte figure in a yellow bikini for the swimsuit round.
Sthefany Gutierrez – who represented Venezuela in the 67th edition of the beauty pageant – came third.
She went for a bright ensemble and wore a beautiful yellow bikini during the competition.
Angela Ponce, 27 – who became the first-ever transgender contestant gunning for the Miss Universe title – said: “What I feel by being the first transgender contestant at Miss Universe is a big sense of responsibility.
“It gives me a lot of pride, and personally I’m very proud to have made it here.”
The proud contestant kept it simple in a black beaded two-piece and curly hair.
Miss Thailand’s Sophida Kanchanarin donned a shiny silver dress for the beauty pageant, while Natalia Carvajal – Miss Costa Rica – showed off her toned abs in a pink swimsuit.
Also competing in this year’s Miss Universe pageant was Miss Curacao, Akisha Albert.
The bombshell wore a green swimsuit and made it into the top 10.
Miss Canada – Marta Stepien – showed off her slim figure in a silver beaded dress.
She let her beautiful brown locks flow down her neck as she stormed the runway.
Manita Devkota – Miss Nepal – also represented her country in the competition.
Before the final, Manita said: “I see myself as a pioneer. I’m a first generation immigrant and college graduate.
“That fact alone has made me value my dreams and feel empowered. I now work to empower the girls in my community who face menstrual health challenges by providing them health training, solutions, and health education.”
And lastly, Kiara Ortega of Puerto Rico was the tenth beauty to show off her figure. The contestant showcased her hard-rock abs in a blue swimsuit.
However, while good looks are of paramount importance, participants are required to have the personality to back it up.
Question and answer sessions are in place to ask the women about their political appearances.
Over the years, talking points have included disease control, peace and the public awareness of AIDS.
The new Miss Universe will now have to use her position to spread charitable messages at various events across the world.
