The Irish superstar, who auditioned for The X Factor in 2010, says that despite being flown around the world in private jets and given VIP access to some of the most exclusive parties, he was often made to stay in his hotel room by security.
Niall, 25, said: “Now I can walk down the street which is quite nice and I can go as I please.
“Back in the day you just went along with it as there was nothing you could do about it.
“It was insanely fun – what 18-year-old wouldn’t want that – but it did used to frustrate me that I couldn’t get out of the hotel.
“But last year I got to see more of the actual countries on tour which I am very happy with.”
Unlike former bandmates Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, Niall has managed to keep his love life almost completely out of the spotlight.
While there have been rumours he hooked-up with Ellie Goulding and Made In Chelsea babe Louise Thompson, Niall has never opened up about his flings.
Explaining he has worked hard to keep his relationships off the front page, Niall told fans on a now-deleted Instagram live: “Songs are my way of keeping my life private – I like to keep myself to myself because when I was younger everyone wanted to know where I was going to.
“I learned how to keep my life private and I think I have done a good job of it.”
The Too Much To Ask singer added: “My songs are my way of telling you how I feel in certain situations.
“A lot of the time my songs are personal stuff but other times I just imagine scenarios and I think about random stuff.”
Niall is currently in the process of writing his second album.
After wrapping up a world tour, the Flicker singer first put pen to paper in October for the upcoming release.
After undergoing a sinus operation in September, Niall was left housebound for more than a month in order to make a full recovery.
He used the time to write countless tracks.
