The “Peter Pan of Pop” is 78, weighs 10st 7lb and has a 30-inch waistline. But when he started out in the 1960s he was two stone heavier. And when Corrie’s Minnie Caldwell – played by the late Margot Bryant – described him as fat on telly, alarm bells rang.

Cliff said: “I was two stone heavier than I am now when I was 18.

“In fact, it was on Coronation Street that I got my diet started.

“Minnie Caldwell said: ‘Oh I love that chubby Cliff Richard’. I looked in the mirror and I thought: ‘Yes’…so went on a diet.”

Cliff also tells ITV’s Jonathan Ross Show tomorrow that he turned down the chance to meet his hero Elvis in the 1970s.

He says: “I regret it now as he died not long after that.”

He also relives his four-year nightmare when he was investigated over historic sex abuse allegations before the case was dropped.

He says: “It was tumultuous, horrific, emotionally draining.”
