Review: Romeo and Juliet, Bolshoi Ballet Cinema Season

The Bolshoi Ballet opens its doors to audiences in cinemas worldwide this month, for the 11th season, starting with Romeo and Juliet.

Part One of the 20/21 season has been announced and will include recorded live productions of THE LADY OF THE CAMELLIAS and everyone’s favourite Christmas classic THE NUTCRACKER.

We were lucky enough to be able to watch Romeo and Juliet recently and it was one of the most stunning productions we have ever seen.

Recorded live at State Academic Theatre of Russia, it’s an opulent telling of Romeo and Juliet. With musical direction from Pavel Klinchev and music by Sergei Prokofiev that really bring the Shakespeare classic to life.

 Bolshoi principals Ekaterina Krysanova and Vladislav Lantratov give captivating and emotive performances in the roles of Verona’s young lovers who capture their story perfectly from the delicate theme of Juliet to the ominous Dance of the Knights. Ekaterina and Vladislav embody the two eternal lovers in their tragic tale of love at first sight and the tragedy that follows.

Along with the costumes and set design by Richard Hudson, which complement and enhance the ballet, it’s a truly wonderful captivating watch which will delightful ballet fans new and old and fans of the Shakespeare classic.
