New John David Washington Film Gets Title Change
Gareth Edwards‘ upcoming science fiction movie that features John David Washington has just gotten a title change to The Creator.
It has been in development for about two years now. It’s Gareth Edwards’ upcoming science fiction picture which is now known as The Creator. It was originally titled True Love which seemed like an unusual title for a film showcasing spaceships. John David Washington will star in a principal role in the movie which also moved up its release date from its original planned premiere date of October 6th to September 29th. The picture will now premiere a week earlier than was anticipated which will make it one of the first big movies of the fall. Hopefully, it won’t get lost in the shuffle and the unique nature of the movie would probably make that almost impossible.
A trailer was recently shown at CinemaCon for the highly ambitious picture, The Creator. Its story line centers on the conflict between humans and robots. Washington will play a family man whose daughter is an android. This picture is a highly anticipated one for Edwards who is known for, arguably, the most prestigious of the recent Star Wars pictures: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story from 2016.
Comparisons to Blade Runner are inevitable for the new Edwards picture and the title change was important to differentiate the film from other generic pictures. The original title, True Love, sounded like the title of a romantic comedy or, perhaps, just the type of movie that won’t necessarily appeal to fans of science-fiction movies. Many people who saw the recent trailer were in awe of the upcoming movie’s production design which means it could have Oscar nomination prospects in the technical categories at next year’s Academy Awards.
A good number of IMAX screens will luckily be available for The Creator with its new release date. The film’s star, John David Washington, has had a couple of critical box-office disappointments of late. From the under-performing Tenet (which got hammered by the pandemic) to the star-studded misstep, Amsterdam, Washington’s career needs the type of rejuvenation that could be provided by the big production that is The Creator.
Gareth Edwards is a distinguished British filmmaker who knows blockbusters films like the back of his hand when considering his past work such as Godzilla from 2014. Edwards also helmed the independent film, Monsters, before that which made Edwards an official force to contend with back in 2010 when it premiered. All eyes are on The Creator to see if it will be the director’s most fascinating film to date. It will compete at the box-office against the PAW Patrol sequel which is for a completely different audience altogether.
