She first hit the spotlight back in 1999 with her debut album, Kaleidoscope.
The collection of songs peaked at number 144 on the US Billboard 200 chart and reached the top five on Top Heatseekers chart.
The New York-born singer/songwriter’s most stand-out track from the album was Caught Out There, becoming a top ten Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs hit.
Kelis‘ follow-up record Wanderland (2001) wasn’t very well received and didn’t manage to attract a lot of sales attention.
It wasn’t until 2003 that Kelis really experienced global success, with her third album Tasty, featuring the insatiably catchy track, Milkshake.
Milkshake went gold in the US, selling over 500,000 copies. It also saw Kelis bag a Grammy Award nomination in 2004 for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.
Kelis went onto release a fourth album Kelis Was Here (2006) but it was reportedly the subject of musical disputes.
This led Kelis to go on a musical hiatus, seeing her train at Le Cordon Bleu culinary school.
She later brought out additional albums: Flesh Tone (2010) and Food (2014).
Kelis, who is said to have sold six million albums worldwide, has remained fairly under the radar in recent years.
However she was back with a bang this week, as she sold out back-to-back shows at the Jazz Cafe in London.
And the mum-of-two, who was married to rapper Nas from 2005-2010, appears to look very different these days.
The music star, who boasts 437K Instagram followers, has ditched her famous honey-coloured curls in favour of a bright-blue crop.
Kelis showed off the striking ‘do which features a cherry red lips design in a post to her following earlier this week.
The post, which she captioned sealed with a kiss, was flooded with comments.
One fan praised: “The trendsetter. This is amazing.”
While another continued: “I am loving all of Kelis’ hairstyles.”
A third added: “Only you could pull this off.”
